The port of Augusta is an important Commercial mooring and Military base.
Its particular characteristics, with its depth, its broad expanse of water, allow interior berths for ships of all sizes also its central position along the routes of international traffic in the Mediterranean, make it an important industrial port and transit international.
Main Italian oil port with over 32 Mln tons of liquid bulk handled, considering that 60% of the national fuel needs are met by the refining done in petrochemical complex next to the port of Augusta.

CHOROGRAPHY

The Augusta Bay is made up of three large sections:

• Xifonio Port which is the part of the sea between  Punta Izzo and Punta Carcarella.
• Megarese Port: is the interior of the harbor section of the north / west coast bounded by the northern dams, Central and South. Stretching for 9 km north-south direction and 4 km towards East – West.
• The Priolo Breast: is the area located in front of oil refineries and is from the southern Megarian dam and Magnisi Peninsula.

NAVIGATION HEADLIGHTS AND LIGHTS

It is accessed through two openings: the main, Levante and the secondary Scirocco, these interrupt the breakwater into three sections: the northern, central and southern.

Pilots

The pilotage service is mandatory for all merchant ships with a gross registered tonnage from 500 tons and at the discretion of the ship’s command to the military. The corporation of pilots of the Port of Augusta consists of 20 elements and has 6 motorboats. The pilot embarks to provide their own service outside of the bay at a distance of about two nautical miles from the entrance. The pilot station offers day and night continuous service at the seat of the Corporation in via Adua 2 (tel. 0931.521967) where it is carried out continuously listen VHF – channel 12.

Tugs

The towing service is carried out by the Company Augustea S.p.A. by means of 12 tugs of power up to 4000 HP authorized in addition to the port maneuvers also to the recovery and rescue operations outside the territorial waters. The guard tugboats perform continuous service during the course of 24 hours by VHF – channel 11

Mooring

The mooring and unmooring service is made with a continuous zone from Ormeggiatori Group of the port. The group, which counts with a floating park currently is constituted from 7 motorboats with power up to 800 HP also equipped the towage of vessels on very shallow water. Continuously operating radio listening on VHF channel 11.

PORT CHEMICAL SERVICE

The port chemical consultant carries out checks and releasing the certifications required from the special legislation in force concerning the storage, loading, unloading and transit of dangerous goods in packaged form.
The port Chemical Ensures the dangerous conditions for placing the ships in dock . Performs investigations for issuing certificates confirming the “security state” requested to perform for mooring and/or dry-docking of vessels inerted tanks; the findings for issuing certificates confirming the”security state” required to carry out the washing of tanks with crude oil (crude oil washing); It performs investigations for the loading and unloading of dry cargo carried in bulk referred to IMSB Code (International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes Code);the findings provided by the procedures for the prevention of pollution in Attachment II of MARPOL 73/78, held as part of their professional competence every other task required by the competent authority; It performs any other findings provided by international, European and national safety of the ship and the port.
